The Water Organ at Historic Kilmun on the banks of the Holy Loch in Argyll, Scotland is a rare and intriguing curiosity. Contrary to most organs, it uses the weight of water to pump air through the pipes, a technology with roots in 3rd-century BC, but still useful in a 1909 venue with no electricity. The lively musical pieces played in that sunny afternoon concert were a delight. But as the last notes faded, the looming presence of silent Celtic gravestones, ancient oaks and the huge domed mausoleum took over, their silence a contradiction to the tumultuous history of 1500 years of human habitation on that spot. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/4403c218-b5c6-448a-9f6b-6e10834c62d5/ASA_PAR_KEW.jpg Mixed Media KEW ... The next ‘disruption to the familiar’ occurs as I climb a little winding Victorian style staircase to the walkway above the plants. The ‘eye of the storm’ is a calm, yet dangerous place in the middle of a hurricane. My inclination to animate things, made me wonder, if you were literally, the eye looking out at the chaos in our world today what would you see? Starting as an exploration of textures, architecture, colours and ephemera the piece gradually coalesces into a statement of my astrophysical marvelling. Organized into four sections the collage represents the four cardinal directions, the four horsemen of the apocalypse, four seasons, elements, noble truths, humours, moon phases, the four ages, the four types of animals. Four is the number of Order in the universe. While four divides and orders the whole, the whole is all connected on the canvas we call earth. Repeating elements of wood bits, stamps and round shapes against the continuous background patterns provide unification. Even though the Butterfly Effect does not determine the weather across the globe, as a pop culture meme would suggest, it can connote global interconnection, and so there is a moth fluttering across the canvas. The sweeping colours across the scene, with the sun in the east and the moon glimmering in the west, recollect the earth’s rotation in an immutable universe, that some say, was not built for the human mind to understand. Intrepidly, we persevere with Mars landers and OSIRIS-Rex. The year 2020, ironically a human construct of clear vision, brings a time of uncertainty, of existential angst, and even though ‘four’ can be the ground for our feet to stand on, our heads are in the clouds of cosmic insignificance. Yet, I agree with the author of a Scientific American blog post*, there is a better response to the vastness of the universe and the insignificance of humanity. It is to marvel at the human mind itself, exploring the cosmos, calculating the electroweak epoch beginning at 10−36 seconds after the Big Bang, and even conceiving of Minkowski space, a four-dimensional continuum that joins, in a mathematical model, space and time. I didn’t finish reading The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking)*** by Katie Mack, which I started recently and promise I will complete some day before everything ends, I did read enough to once again, be in a state of wonder and marvel. The ideas come together to be represented in this piece Moth Marvel in Minkowski Space. *https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/how-mere-humans-manage-to-comprehend-the-vastness-of-the-universe/ **Minkowski space is a four-dimensional continuum that joins, in a mathematical model, space and time, helping cosmology to understand how the universe works on a macro and micro level. ***http://www.astrokatie.com/book https://www.wpassmoregodfrey.com/sculpture daily 0.75 2026-10-07 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/1790911213666-T7NEK0T5P81800PXPEWH/Votrtex%2BMe%2BP1220038.jpg Sculpture VORTEX SELF ... The process started with the eerie sensation of having my face cast – feeling the plaster gypsum harden, wiggling my eyebrows and nose to get out of it and digging plaster dust out from my eyes and mouth. Guess I didn’t keep things shut well enough! As I worked on the plain white face of me staring back, I tried to follow the workshop instructions – who am I? There wasn’t anything too coherent – turtles hiding inside their shells, vortexes in space, a really cool way of making a horn from cardboard. I worked some more – always something to remember – don’t get discouraged with your creation until you’ve put a whole lot of hours into it – and added prairie wheat, a prism that will make lovely rainbows, a map with it’s own map pin, a boney finger and an animal nose. Finally I added a star ‘mole’ and some copper eyes. What does it all mean? All these disparate elements that come together like ingredients in a cake, to make the ‘me’ I am. Difficult to pin an identity down, dangerous to pin a label, complicated to encapsulate in one image – we are really shape shifting through a mixing bowl of feelings, memories, reactions and potentialities. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/1790912649693-RIRO48TLR7CWHY1Y7RUY/Passmore_Birds.jpg Sculpture Colourful altered book sculpture made from recycled paper, depicting two birds with long beaks, feathers, and painted faces, positioned on book stacks against a plain gray background. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/1790911366183-ZXMJFX858NWV8SW9KVYV/WPassmore-Godfrey%2Bin%2Bprogress%2B-%2BIMG_2369.png Sculpture TRAVELLER https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/79e037ee-bc20-43bd-bed5-1fd0b93885af/WPassmoreGodfrey+-+Other+birds%2C+by+the+light+of+the+moon....jpg Sculpture Two colorful bird sculptures with metal wire stems on a magazine-themed base. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/7cc488a0-93d2-457e-af80-b5a97734c821/WPassmoreGodfrey+-+They+said+they+were+leaving.jpg Sculpture THEY SAID THEY WERE LEAVING AND TAKING THE PIANO FROM CHAPTER 16 ... The visual story is drawn from the dramatic relationships of the components in the pieces. The characters are ‘static puppets’, with their moments suspended in time like one frame of a storyboard, or actors on a tiny toy theatre stage. In this piece I have imagined the characters have tired of the book’s narrative and are determined to leave it. They are packed and ready to go. As an afterthought they have impulsively decided to take the piano from Chapter 16. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/a1e9a5f9-9330-4d12-893a-dafabf0fcc58/WPassmoreGodfrey+-+They+flew+to+the+armpits....jpg Sculpture Whimsical sculpture of a badminton player with butterfly wings on a green base. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/96dd6659-685e-433f-b9b6-73240fab8386/WPassmoreGodfrey+-+Hands.jpg Sculpture HANDS https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/1791471697605-P9EJQHK9WNYMRW7PQ81M/WPassmoreGodfreyIMG_6002.jpg Sculpture - WPassmoreGodfreyIMG_6002.jpg A handmade, artistic sculpture of a bird made from various materials, including paper, wood, feathers, and fabric, set against a plain white background. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/b6f9b42c-fbd0-4dc6-a456-a4a9952cbf53/WPassmoreGodfrey+-+Carthage+Delenda+Est.jpg Sculpture CARTHAGE DELENDE EST ... It’s always fun to throw in a bit of Latin. The title means Carthage must Fall and reflects the policy of the Roman Republic in 2nd century BC, of total decimation versus a peace treaty as a way to end conflict. Life begins, unfolds and then ends. As in all good stories it has a beginning, middle and end. And though it is a cliché, we write the pages of our own unique destinies or portraits, whether on fine vellum or butcher paper. I imagine this book as my life story, starting with youthful vigour, but ending aged and both literally and figuratively on my deathbed. The details of a life might be found in and between the lines, but the universality of life itself is simply represented by the three faces of Beginning, Middle and End. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/1791471670720-Y2YJFPB3DGJKFNCEKW7R/IMG_5992.jpg Sculpture - IMG_5992.jpg A detailed model of a bird, made of various craft materials including paper and wood, with yellow, black, and brown feathers and a wooden base, set against a plain white background. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/0a0e22b4-6f01-4d15-b7b4-2c7c40ce49d8/WPassmoreGodfrey+-+Allegro+Bird.jpg Sculpture A colorful wooden and paper model of a mythical bird with a large beak, blue wings made of paper, and a long tail, set against a plain white background. https://www.wpassmoregodfrey.com/puppet-arts daily 0.75 2026-10-07 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/8fad9cb2-19a6-41a5-b279-1d85ae130e9b/P1120851.jpg Puppet Arts WIND from Pix and the Beetle https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/c2685655-39c2-49b3-b7aa-790374c2a918/Screen+Shot+2013-04-02+at+2.34.27+PM.jpg Puppet Arts TIGER from Debussy's Toybox https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/38a7d2f4-9450-4208-b389-0b4ba9d405c4/thank+you+card.jpg Puppet Arts HAPPY and HAPPY https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/6a4b0d72-3a6d-4dff-ae73-7a83f0c9df8c/WPassmoreGodfrey-+Brainiac.jpg Puppet Arts BRAINIAC https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/d69c42f8-a956-49f0-b3b6-7cd59f91fca1/WPassmoreGodfrey+FMS+set+150+dpi%2C+800+kb.jpg Puppet Arts FINDING MY SONG set https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/cac29d52-92be-429b-b476-fe872ab34e47/WPassmoreGodfrey+-+Mouse+150+dpi+800+kb.jpg Puppet Arts MOUSE from Finding my Song https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/54f02400-28c1-47fb-9941-7fbd1fd1ef52/WPassmoreGodfrey+-+Aria+150+dpi+800Moon+Zooms.jpg Puppet Arts ARIA and Wendy from Moon Zooms https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/26a049be-bf6b-46bd-ae2b-5913cc944727/WPassmoreGodfrey+-Beaka.jpg Puppet Arts BEAKA from Beaka's Incredible Invention https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/b9a4fb91-6e4a-493f-b088-02460f58a2e6/WPassmoreGodfrey+-+turkey+150+dpi+800.jpg Puppet Arts TURKEY from Why the Rabbit's Nose Wiggles https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/cfb7ae12-f3b5-4a2a-9cb8-e3d122d8c62c/WPassmoreGodfrey-Wise+Owl.jpg Puppet Arts OWL https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/704f8ae9-4aa7-45d4-b871-70996687807d/WPassmoregodfrey+-+Gordon+150+dpi%2C+800+kb.jpg Puppet Arts DRAGON https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/5f4fc65f-df65-4494-9c99-3e520e9081f9/Homer+and+icicle+-+Version+2.jpg Puppet Arts HOMER the ELF https://www.wpassmoregodfrey.com/exhibitions daily 0.75 2026-10-07 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/9a53059c-4bf6-45ad-a433-cd6bf4894df5/albirda+instagram+YEG+front.jpg Exhibitions Albirda logo in blue with tagline 'Put a bird on it' in black beneath https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/640323e0-474f-4ca4-bde6-b96a0cce8af0/Screenshot+2025-02-22+at+10.14.35+AM.png Exhibitions Flyer for a holiday craft fair titled 'Hand Made Here' featuring an illustration of two hands knitting, with event details including date, location, and hours. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6a99f0c538fa9e30045b0d2c/5742487f-0c53-4c48-8f1f-8964f8385974/SelfPortraits+poster.jpg Exhibitions Event poster for the Alberta Society of Artists exhibition 'Self Portraits: Within the Artist' at the Alberta Jubilee Auditoriums.
